Learning how to calculate the number of carbohydrates in a food or meal that you are consuming.

Worried about the number of carbohydrates you are consuming from food either for health reasons or to avoid gaining weight by consuming too many calories?

Look at the nutrition label. It will give the serving size. Find the line that says total carbohydrates and under that it also lists fiber. This is reported in grams which is the measurement used. Look at the total carbohydrate number in grams and the total amount of fiber in grams and then the amount of protein in grams. This information is for one serving which is stated at the top of the label. So if the food has 15 grams of total carbohydrates and 5 grams of dietary fiber and 15 grams of protein per serving then you are consuming a total of -5 grams of carbohydrate per serving. 15 grams of total carbohydrates-5 grams of dietary fiber-15 grams of protein= -5 grams of net or total carbohydrate per serving which is ideal when watching calories or carbohydrates.

HERE ARE YOUR TAKEAWAYS:

Always read a nutrition label when wanting to know the calories, total carbohydrates, and protein
in food.
Do the simple calculation of total grams of carbohydrates-total grams of dietary fiber-total grams of protein to give you the total amount of carbohydrates being consumed.
Choose whole foods and less processed foods as often as you can.
